The Göta Canal waterway stretches across Sweden linking Gothenburg on the west coast and Stockholm on the east. A cruise on the Göta Canal, built during the years 1809-1832, is a unique experience. Kings, authors, and other celebrities have enjoyed this journey. With many stops en route on the four- and six-day cruises, this leisurely trip, gliding along at a serene 5 knots, takes you past fortress ruins, medieval cloisters, royal palaces, 12th century churches, picturesque hamlets and lush Swedish forests, home to golden eagle, herons, nightingales and elk. In many places the former towpaths along the canal offer excellent opportunities for walking, jogging and biking (the boat carries 2 bikes you can borrow).
