ANCIENT CITIES OF THE GOLDEN RING The Golden Ring is one of the oldest Russian routes. It goes to the northeast of Moscow and forms a circle. There are many interesting ancient Russian towns along the way, full of history and unique Russian architecture of the 12th - 18th centuries. The highway runs through huge birch forests and rolling hills, via small farming villages as well as past groups of country cottages, dachas in Russian. The Lavra, Trinity St. Sergius Monastery of Sergiev Posad is inscribed on the UNESCO List of the World Cultural Heritage. The drive of 73 km (45 miles) north of Moscow takes about 1 1/2 hours. Visit the Trinity St. Sergius Monastery (Lavra), founded in the first half of the 1340's it is the religious center of the Russian Orthodox Church. It is the residence of the Patriarch of All Russia, a functioning monastery and also the Theological Academy. You will then visit the History and Art Museum-Reserve, a major treasury of Russian art. The museum boasts a rich collection of icons of the 15-17th centuries painted by Old Masters, Andrey Rublev and Daniel Chorny, and rare examples of folk art and Russian national costumes. Now the museum collection comprises more than 120,000 items: ancient icons, medieval manuscripts and old printed books, icon and ornamental embroideries, church utensils, articles of gold and silver, paintings, engravings, folk and contemporary art. Finaly you will visit the Museum of Russian and Foreign Toys. Sergiev Posad is also the hometown of old Russian handicrafts. The tour brings you into the world of ancient Russian crafts maintained by craftsmen of today. Sergiev Posad is the place where the first Russian matryoshka (nesting doll made of wood and beautifully hand-painted) was made. After lunch in a local restaurant en route return to Moscow. Upon arrival enjoy a city tour including: the Kremlin-the heart of the town, with the Rozhdestvenskiy Cathedral, one of the oldest cathedral's in Suzdal. Next to the cathedral there are the Arkhiereiskie chambers. Next you will visit the Saviour-Euthimiev monastery-fortress, founded in the 14th century. Here you will see The Proezdnaya Tower and The Spaso-Preobrazhensky Cathedral. After lunch in Suzdal you will continue to Yaroslav. Overnight at hotel Yubileinaja. Day 3: Yaroslav - Moscow After breakfast at the hotel, enjoy a city tour of Yaroslav and visit to Spassky Monastery. Continue on driving through Rostov and Sergei Posad to Moscow. Lunch en route.
