Reykjavik – Borgarfjörður - Eyjafjörður/Thinguyarsysla – Egilsstaðir - Skaftafell - Reykjavík
 

Day 1 Reykjavik – Borgarfjörður

Drive to Gullfoss and Geysir. Visit the church of Skálholt and Thingvellir National Park, site of the Viking Parliament, before continuing to Borgarfjörður for dinner and overnight.

 

Day 2 Snæfellsnes

Drive around Snæfellsnes Peninsula, dominated by the glacier where, according to Jules Verne’s book, the entrance to the Center of the Earth can be found. Visit small fishing towns and lava fields, scouting birds and beautiful alpine and arctic flowers. Dinner and overnight in Borgarfjörður.

 

Day 3 Eyjafjörður - þingeyarsysla

Pass the beautiful waterfalls of Hraunfossar (lava falls) and Reykholt, home of the 13th-century poet, historian and statesman Snorri Sturluson. Visit Skagafjörður to meet the Icelandic horse. Dinner and overnight in Eyjafjörður or Thingeyarsysla area.

 

Day 4 Eyjafjörður

Enjoy morning sightseeing in Akureyri with a short boat trip to Hrísey Island on Iceland’s longest fjord – Eyjafjörður. Visit the fishing village of Dalvik, then return to Eyjafjörður or Thingeyarsysla area for dinner and overnight.

 

Day 5 Goðafoss – Mývatn

Visit the Waterfall of the Gods, Goðafoss, en route to Lake Mývatn, home of lush vegetation and many species of birds not found elsewhere in Europe. Visit Dimmuborgir lava field, and climb to the rim of Hverfjäll ash crater. Eyjafjörður or Thingeyarsysla area for dinner and overnight.

 

Day 6 Dettifoss - Fljótsdalshérad

Travel around Tjörnes Peninsula, a fascinating geological area. Stop at the magnificent Dettifoss waterfall, the most powerful in Europe. Dinner and overnight in the Egilsstaðir area.

Day 7 Fljótsdalur – Seyðisfjörður

Tour around Lake Lögurinn, passing the Skriðuklaustur farm mansion. If conditions allow, walk up to Hengifoss, one of Iceland’s highest waterfalls. Visit the fishing town of Seyðisfjörður in the afternoon. Dinner and overnight in Egilsstaðir.

Day 8 Borgarfjörður – Eystri

This short, wide fjord and grassy, fertile valley with a charming fishing village, is located northeast of Egilsstaðir. View colorful mountains, beautiful rocks and rare stones. Dinner and overnight in Egilsstaðir.

Day 9 Fljótsdalshérad – Skaftafell

Vatnajökull, Europe’s largest glacier, dominates the landscape with glacial tongues and icebergs calving into a glacial lagoon. Take an exciting boat trip on the lagoon. Dinner and overnight near Skaftafell National Park.

Day 10 Skaftafell

Spend the day walking or relaxing at Skaftafell. Dinner and overnight near Skaftafell National Park.

Day 11 Skaftafell – Reykjavík

Return to Reykjavík in the late afternoon, through fertile coastal meadows and sandy desert overshadowed by mountain cliffs and glaciers. Pass beautiful waterfalls on the way, and watch for puffins and seals.
